Disciples making disciples — disciples of Jesus in Bedford, Western Australia
Our weekly worship service from 9:30am until 11, with Morning Tea served afterwards
Brothers and sisters, there is terrible news. By now most of you have probably heard it. A revolting crime was committed in our neighbourhood, the murder of a woman, her mother, and her three young daughters. A man has presented himself to the police, who found the victims at a house down the street from our church.
Please be assured that police say they have no ongoing concerns for the safety of people in Bedford in relation to this case. More information, including names of the two adult victims, can be found in various news outlets. I am giving minimal detail here.
I am posting this for a few reasons. First, we can and should pray. We should pray that God will bring comfort to the grieving, and justice to this awful world. We should pray the Lord will return soon and deliver us from evil of this kind. We should pray for any opportunity we can get to help anyone affected by this crime.
Second, I do not know whether anyone in our church family has any connection to the victims and their families. It is possible that some of you may be grieving, and I want to encourage you to speak to me or someone else you trust, and to get appropriate help. Even if we don't know them, a crime like this can shake us, especially when it occurs so nearby. I myself am quite upset. If you find yourself struggling to cope, again, please speak to myself or someone else you trust, and let's get the help we need. This goes for anyone in the Coode Street area or Bedford community or elsewhere, not just for our church members.
Third, I want to remind you all of the one thing that keeps me together when I consider such evil as this. I cannot fathom why a good God allows this kind of suffering and evil. It makes no sense at all to me. I have thought long and hard about it for years, but at the bottom there is a mystery and I don't know why.
But what I do know is that God sent his Son Jesus to die for our sins and to be raised to life again, and a God who would do that for us is a God we can trust. It's times like these when my faith reaches its very limit, and would break if it weren't for my confidence in the gospel message that Jesus is the resurrected Lord who loved us all the way to the cross and beyond.
Don't be ashamed if your own faith is shaken or falters. Be honest about your doubts and your feelings, honest with yourself and honest with someone else. Find someone who won't judge you, whom you can trust to listen, and get it all off your chest. As always, I am available to any and all of you.
Let me close by urging you, again, to pray earnestly for our neighbours and our community, and the friends and families from whom these five precious people were torn in this heinous crime. Come soon, Lord Jesus!
